The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation () has reported a significant surge in its first-quarter income for 2024, reaching a staggering PHP25.24 billion (€408.5 million), marking a remarkable 42.57 percent increase compared to the same period last year.  

In a press release, PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco  satisfaction with the firms' performance.   

"We are happy to announce that PAGCOR is able to sustain our growth trajectory in the first quarter of 2024, and this should help position us into achieving another record-breaking year," he said.  

Net operating income after expenses during the quarter stood at PHP18.99 billion (€307.3 million), reflecting a substantial 54.22 percent increase from the figures recorded in January-March 2023, which totalled PHP12.32 billion (€199.4 million).  

Gaming operations emerged as the primary revenue driver for PAGCOR in the first quarter, generating PHP22.29 billion (€360.8 million). Within this segment, the e-Games sector, comprising eBingo, eGames, and Bingo grantees, contributed PHP9.69 billion (€156.8 million), while licensed casinos, including integrated resorts, brought in PHP8.04 billion (€130.1 million).  

“The e-games sector will be our major source of gaming revenues this year and in the next few years as innovation and technological integration allow the sector to offer more excitement and convenience to gamers,” Tengco said.  

However, revenues from PAGCOR-run casinos under the Casino Filipino brand experienced a decline, contributing PHP3.7 billion (€59.9 million), down from their share in 2023.  

Offshore gaming operations also made a notable contribution to PAGCOR's earnings, accounting for PHP860.89 million (€13.9 million) or 3.86% of the total gaming income for the first quarter of 2024.  

Tengco also emphasized the positive impact of PAGCOR's robust earnings on various socio-civic programs, including funding for the Universal Healthcare Program, which provides health insurance to millions of underprivileged Filipinos through Philhealth.  

Out of the nearly PHP19 billion (€307.5 million) net income in the first quarter of 2024, PHP15.56 billion (€251.8 million) will be allocated towards Contributions to Nation-Building. This encompasses various initiatives such as the 5 percent franchise tax, government shares, funding for local government units (LGUs) hosting PAGCOR casinos, socio-civic projects, and support for sports development.  

's latest earnings surpassed its previous record set in 2019 before the pandemic outbreak, indicating a robust recovery and growth trajectory for the corporation. In the first quarter of 2019, total income stood at PHP19.49 billion (€315.4 million), a figure comfortably surpassed by the first quarter of 2024 by nearly 30 percent.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kominfo) has announced the formation of a multi-agency task force in a decisive move against online gambling.. This initiative is a significant step in the country’s ongoing battle against online gambling, an activity that remains entirely illegal across the nation. The task force, as revealed by Kominfo, will consist of representatives from various government agencies.

The government has already implemented a series of stringent measures

The first line of defense is the Registration Requirement. Every website operating within the country’s borders must register with the government. This registration process is not merely a formality. It equips the authorities with broad powers, compelling platforms to disclose user data when required.

Next, the government has enacted the Intermediary Liability Regulation (MR5) in 2020. This law mandates websites to grant Indonesian law enforcement access to any user content, including private communications and storage. Any failure to comply can result in the website being blocked entirely, a stern reminder of the government’s resolve.

Content Removal from social media and interna Social media and internet platforms are obligated to remove content deemed unlawful at the request of any government agency. The response time is swift - urgent requests must be addressed within four hours, while non-urgent ones have a 24-hour window.

The government also wields the power of Penalties for Non-compliance. Internet and social media platforms that fail to comply with the rules face the risk of fines. Repeat offenders could find their platforms blocked in Indonesia, and their staff could even face criminal sanctions.

He stated, “We have done everything within the authority of Kominfo.

Both Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Johor state Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi have categorically denied reports suggesting the establishment of a casino in Forest City, refuting the claims made by a Bloomberg report.  

In a recent statement, Ibrahim rejected the idea, emphasizing that there are no plans for a casino licence in the area. 

Responding to inquiries regarding Malaysia's alleged consideration of a second casino licence for the Forest City development, Anwar stated that discussions with prominent figures such as Vincent Tan and Lim Kok Thay did not involve the topic of a casino licence. 

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz declared that no casinos will be permitted to open or operate within the state. Onn Hafiz emphasized that the Johor government has never entertained discussions or proposals regarding the establishment of casinos. 

Speculation has arisen regarding the potential economic impact of introducing a casino to the $100 billion (€93.1 billion) Forest City project. While some believe it could inject new life into the development, others highlight Malaysia's strict regulatory framework concerning gambling as a significant hurdle.

The joint venture entity overseeing the development of Japan's inaugural integrated resort (IR) in Osaka, known as , has successfully secured a substantial loan agreement with a consortium of banks. The €3.1 billion loan agreement represents a significant step forward for the ambitious project. 

Osaka IR Corporation, a partnership between US-based casino giant MGM Resorts International and local partner ORIX Corporation, will collaborate with MUFG Bank Ltd and Mitsui Banking Corporation on what has been hailed as Japan's largest co-financing arrangement by a group of banks. The massive $100 billion (€93.5 billion) property project, which also involves the nation's monarch as a shareholder, has garnered attention from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. A recent Bloomberg report said that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held preliminary discussions with Vincent Tan, the founder of Berjaya Corp, and Lim Kok Thay from Genting Group regarding the proposed casino venture. 

Despite the discussions, uncertainties loom over the potential project due to 's predominantly Muslim population and cultural aversion to gambling. The Muslim-majority nation's stance on gambling presents a significant hurdle to the establishment of a casino, raising questions about the feasibility of the proposed venture. 

Notably, the country's King holds a substantial stake of over 20 percent in the Forest City joint venture, which is overseen by developer Country Garden. Additionally, King Ibrahim has interests in Berjaya Assets Bhd, while his daughter serves as the Chair of Berjaya Corp. King Ibrahim recently ascended to the throne in January, adding complexity to the political landscape surrounding potential developments in Forest City.

Philippine Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to step up efforts in preventing foreigners engaged in illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) from entering the country and setting up illicit operations. Gatchalian underscored the importance of the BI acting as effective gatekeepers against criminal elements exploiting the Philippines for illegal activities. 

The senator's call comes amidst growing concerns over -related crimes, including human trafficking. According to a report from the Philippine National Police (PNP), over 4,000 individuals were victimized in the first half of last year alone. Gatchalian emphasized the need for stringent measures to combat these criminal activities and protect the country's citizens. 

In response to these issues, Gatchalian has proposed a resolution to permanently ban illegal POGO operations, highlighting their associations with criminal elements. Despite ongoing licensing by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), Gatchalian argued for the cessation of such activities to safeguard the country's integrity. 

While some politicians and PAGCOR continue to support offshore gaming due to the revenue it generates and the jobs it creates, Gatchalian remained firm in his stance against illegal POGOs. He stressed the importance of prioritizing national security and combating organized crime over financial gains. 

Earlier this week, the Chinese Embassy in Manila its endorsement of the Philippine government efforts to address the underlying issues associated with POGOs. In a statement, the Chinese Embassy said that gambling in any form is illegal according to Chinese law. It also reiterated the crackdown on Chinese nationals involved in gambling businesses abroad, emphasizing the importance of abiding by local laws and regulations. 

Meanwhile, has announced plans to privatise its 45 casinos by the third quarter of 2025, anticipating significant revenue generation. Donaco highlights that visitation numbers have stabilized, reaching levels consistent with the previous quarter. This stabilization reflects the gradual return of tourism in and Vietnam to pre-pandemic levels, signalling positive momentum for the company. 

The group achieved strong financial results, reporting a group net revenue of AUD12.66 million (€7.7 million) and EBITDA of AUD8.39 million (€5 million), marking a remarkable 66 percent increase over the last quarter. The quarterly report underscores the robust performance of Donaco's key operations. 

Donaco's DNA Star Vegas operation, situated on the Cambodia-Thailand border, recorded substantial growth, with net revenue reaching AUD8.82 million (€5.3 million) and property-level EBITDA of AUD6.63 million (€4 million). The implementation of a membership loyalty program in January 2024 contributed to the operation's success. 

Similarly, Donaco's Vietnam operation, Aristo International Hotel (Aristo), experienced revenue and EBITDA growth driven by stabilized tourism, particularly from China. Aristo reported net revenue of AUD3.84 million (€5.3 million), reflecting a 6.4% increase from the previous quarter. 

The company maintains a strong financial position, ending the period with a robust cash position of AUD28.99 million (€17.6 million), marking a 15.4% increase from the previous quarter. Donaco emphasizes its focus on stringent financial management to support sustainable growth. 

In its quarterly report, Donaco's Non-Executive Chairman, Porntat Amatavivadhana, expressed confidence in the company's outlook, citing continuous improvement across all segments. Additionally, the company anticipates significant growth post-2025, with the development of the new Sapa airport in Lao Cai expected to drive a substantial increase in visitation.

Macau's international visitor arrivals have shown a remarkable recovery, reaching 68.2 percent of 2019 levels in the first quarter of 2024. 584,026 foreign tourists visited during this period, signifying a robust resurgence in tourism activity. 

Data from Macau’s shows that the Philippines emerged as the leading source market for the Special Administrative Region’s (SAR) international visitors, with over 114,000 tourists arriving in the first quarter. This represents a substantial 23.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2019. The proximity of Macau to Hong Kong may have contributed to this surge, given the significant number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong. 

Visitor numbers from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand have also rebounded significantly, reaching 70.8 percent, 89.2 percent, and 89.2 percent of their respective 2019 levels. This resurgence underscores the gradual recovery of tourism from Southeast Asian countries to Macau. 

However, visitor numbers from Northeast Asian markets, particularly South Korea and Japan, have lagged. Macau received only around half of its pre-COVID levels of Korean visitors and around 40 percent of Japanese visitors in the first quarter of 2024. 

In long-haul markets, visitors from the U.S. have shown a moderate rebound, reaching 66.5 percent of the 2019 first-quarter level. While not as robust as some regional markets, this recovery indicates a gradual resurgence in long-haul tourism to Macau. 

Overall, 's visitor arrivals surged by an impressive 79.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024, totalling 8,875,757. This recovery represents 85.7 percent of the figure recorded in the same quarter of 2019, highlighting a significant step towards pre-pandemic tourism levels.

Suntrust Resort Holdings, a gaming operator in the Philippines, has finalized a loan agreement with LET Group Holdings, securing $38 million (€36.6 million) to finance the ongoing development of the . LET Group Holdings, formerly known as Suncity Group, serves as the controlling shareholder of Suntrust Resort Holdings. 

As of December 31, 2023, significant progress has been made in the Westside City Project construction. The structural work and tower facade up to the roof level have been completed, except the facade at the middle portion of the skybridge. 

Under the terms of the loan agreement, LET Group has agreed to extend the $38 million (€36.6 million) loan to , with a repayment period of 10 years from the execution date. However, the repayment period may be extended by mutual agreement or shortened in the event of default. Suntrust anticipates that the loan will not negatively impact its business, operations, or financial condition, as it is expected to enhance the company's prospects. 

The Main Hotel Casino of the Westside City Project is set to offer 475 luxurious hotel rooms and suites, along with a spacious ballroom capable of accommodating up to 550 people. Additionally, the establishment will feature a range of support facilities, including meeting rooms and a bridal room.

In its latest filing to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), Suntrust indicated a delay of at least three months from the initially expected start of the Westside City operations in the fourth quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. 

Upon opening, the casino will boast 281 gaming tables, 1,126 slot machines, and 134 electronic table games (ETGs), catering to both mass-market and VIP clientele. The property will also include state-of-the-art entertainment facilities, such as two theatres seating 1,000 and 800 guests, a grand opera house, and a performing arts theatre seating 3,000. Moreover, a mall comprising food and beverage outlets, retail units, and four cinemas will complement the entertainment offerings. The project will also provide ample parking space, with over 1,000 slots available. 

By securing this loan, Suntrust Resort Holdings is poised to further advance the development of the Westside City Project, contributing to the growth of Manila's Entertainment City and the broader tourism sector in the Philippines.
